Roe v. Wade part 2
Now it's official. The supreme court has overturned the nearly 50 year old precedent setting case of Roe v. Wade. Did the ruling outlaw abortion? No! What the ruling did was return the decion of abortion to the states. It's a huge win for federalism.
There is way too much talk about a right being taken away. First Roe was decided on a right to privacy, so there really was never a right to an abortion. But, let's just assume a right was taken. Sometimes “rights” are reversed. One of the biggest cases as an example is the Dred Scott decision. The court ruled against slavery, which to that point had been considered a right of people. Sometimes we need to re-examine laws and cases to make sure they live up to the standard of the current times.
My hope is we can find some common ground on the issue. The extreme pro-abortion group is the fringe I believe. The country is split about in half on the abortion issue. Sometimes the pro-life side is a small majority and vice versa. I see some middle ground that can be attained if the extremes are ignored. I think we can all agree that rape, incest and life of the mother is a sufficient staring point. I hate to think of any life being exterminated, but I can compromise. I also think there can be common ground on how far along a pregnancy is before it's terminated. There has to be a middle ground of when it's too late to get an abortion. First trimester, detection of a heart beat, maybe? Again, I'm not for ending life at any point, but life is all about compromise.
The work on this issue is not done, but only beginning. For the pro-life side, the work will be to try to get pro-life laws passed in all states. For the pro-abortion side, it's time to get off the streets. The protests/riots are only hurting your cause. If you are really committed to your cause no matter which side you're on, you will get to work. Work to get politicians elected and judges elected/appointed that support your cause. Hell, run for office if you are so inclined.
